The course introduces you to catalytic chemistry in hydrogen production and materials used in electro- and photo-catalytic methods. The 3+2 credit course created by JYU is self-paced and taken online in two parts.
Course contents
- Core physical and chemical concepts in hydrogen production
- Traditional hydrogen production processes
- Electro- and photo(electro)catalytic methods for hydrogen production
- Introduction to physical and chemical material properties
- Materials used in electro- and photocatalytic hydrogen production
- Design and development of novel materials
Learning outcomes
After successfully completing this course, the student
- has a general understanding of traditional and novel methods of hydrogen production and how they relate to Finland’s climate goals, industry, and research
- can establish connections between atomic-level and macroscopic phenomena in hydrogen production
- is familiar with materials used in photo- and electro-catalytic processes
- understands the physical and chemical requirements for a material to perform well in electro- and photocatalysis and how they relate to the atomic and electronic properties of the materials
- recognises the challenges associated with materials used in hydrogen production and how new materials can be developed.
