Geopolitics of hydrogen

This course examines the emerging geopolitics of hydrogen. This involves political risks along with economic and power political competition among producer and consumer countries of hydrogen and related derivative fuels. This competition in turn influences the operating environment of firms in various sectors and value chains of hydrogen business. The course offers a global level outlook into these matters, scrutinising the key concepts of hydrogen geopolitics with illustrative case studies on the EU context, North America, and the Asian context, as well as on the role of fossil fuel producers and implications for energy security and energy diplomacy.

Learning outcomes
After successfully completing this course, the student
- is able to comprehend the international-political operating environment of hydrogen business in the context of globally ongoing energy transitions
- is able to analyse the effects of involved political risks and economic competition among states
- is able to analyse the features of strategies and policies of host states on hydrogen business and their effects globally and regionally
Course material
All materials are available in the course’s Moodle site. Weekly tasks are based on video lectures and other materials.
Completion methods
- Self study online.
- Weekly tasks during 4.3.–12.4.2024 (6 weeks), final assignment to be handed in by 19.4.2024.
(Fall implementation: weekly tasks during 23.10.–1.12., final assignment to be handed in by 8.12.2023.)
The course will also run similarly during 2024–2025 and 2025–2026.
