North Savo region is witnessing the establishment of an extensive energy cluster in support of machine and metal industry, the key industrial sector and a major smart specialization focus in the region, with the objective to improve the international growth potential of businesses in the energy sector through innovation, services of research institutions and product development.
The cluster will be established during 2020 -2021 in a project aimed at building an RDI ecosystem for North Savo Energy Technology funded by the Regional Council of North Savo.
Main actors in the project are:
Savonia’s energy technology education and RDI activities have been concentrated in the Varkaus campus, where engineers are educated in a Finnish language programme. In addition, Varkaus educates Masters of Energy Engineering in an English language programme.
The Energy Research Centre in Savonia’s Varkaus campus provides a range of services for businesses, for example RDI relating to environmentally friendly combustion.
Established in 2010 out of a merger of universities of Kuopio and Joensuu, the University of Eastern Finland (UEF) has campuses in Kuopio and Joensuu. With its approximately 15.500 students and 2.500 staff, the university collaborates closely with research institutions and businesses. Builders of open innovation ecosystems, we are dedicated to generating business particularly in Eastern Finland.
